Hello there sailors,
Today we didn’t really have time for much apart from correcting homework and doing a mock test – Reading.
As the CAE exam is just around the corner, I’d like to ask those of you who are going to take the exam to walk the extra mile and do some reading. You can visit any website that publishes texts written in GOOD English. My personal recommendation is the Guardian Unlimited – www.guardian.co.uk
HOMEWORK
Exam maximiser – page 120 on. There is a practice exam at the end of the Maximiser. You can do papers 1, 2 and 3. You can email me your writings for paper 2, ok? And feel free to do more than only 2. One thing I need you to do when writing is timing yourselves. Do not forget you only have 2 hours to write two 250-word text, all right?
Check the mock test you did in class today at home, before I give you the answers.
Enjoy the weekend!!
Cheers,
Rick

Amazon Indians from one of the world’s last uncontacted tribes have been photographed from the air, with striking images released on Thursday showing them painted bright red and brandishing bows and arrows.
The photographs of the tribe near the border between Brazil and Peru are rare evidence that such groups exist. A Brazilian official involved in the expedition said many of them are in increasing danger from illegal logging.
“What is happening in this region is a monumental crime against the natural world, the tribes, the fauna and is further testimony to the complete irrationality with which we, the ‘civilized’ ones, treat the world,” Jose Carlos Meirelles was quoted as saying in a statement by the Survival International group.
One of the pictures, which can be seen on Survival International’s Web site (http://www.survival-international.org), shows two Indian men covered in bright red pigment poised to fire arrows at the aircraft while another Indian looks on.
Another photo shows about 15 Indians near thatched huts, some of them also preparing to fire arrows at the aircraft.
“The world needs to wake up to this, and ensure that their territory is protected in accordance with international law. Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct,” said Stephen Corry, the director of Survival International, which supports tribal people around the world.
Of more than 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, more than half live in either Brazil or Peru, Survival International says. It says all are in grave danger of being forced off their land, killed and ravaged by new diseases.

Hi there kids,
Today we had a rough time trying to work on the SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE, huh?! I’d like you guys to have a look at the text on BUFFY: THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. There are lots of sentences there which have the different verbs you have studied so far, and also lots of examples of the simple present tense in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences. Can you remember all of them?
VERB TO BE:
- Affirmative sentences: Michael is a student.
- Negative sentences: Michael is not a student. / Michael isn’t a student.
- Interrogative sentences: Is Michael a student?
When we use the verb to be, there is no other auxiliary verb in the sentence. Just make sure you remember which form to use with each person:
I AM
YOU ARE
HE IS
SHE IS
IT IS
WE ARE
YOU ARE
THEY ARE
HAVE GOT / HAS GOT
- Affirmative sentences: Susan has got long hair.
- Negative sentences: Susan has not got long hair. / Susan hasn’t got long hair.
- Interrogative sentences: Has Susan got long hair?
You also need to remember which form goes with each person:
I HAVE GOT
YOU HAVE GOT
HE HAS GOT
SHE HAS GOT
IT HAS GOT
WE HAVE GOT
YOU HAVE GOT
THEY HAVE GOT
As you can see, we use HAS with he, she and it. We use HAVE with the others.
SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
We use the simple present tense to talk about habits, routines, things we do every day or with a certain frequency and facts.
- Affirmative sentences: Anthony lives in Brasília.
- Negative sentences: Anthony does not live in Brasília. / Anthony doesn’t live in Brasília.
- Interrogative sentences: Does Anthony live in Brasília.
And this is how we would use the verb live:
I LIVE
YOU LIVE
HE LIVES
SHE LIVES
IT LIVES
WE LIVE
YOU LIVE
THEY LIVE
When we talk about he, she and it, we need to add and -s or -es to the verb.
In negative sentences, we need to use:
I DON’T LIVE
YOU DON’T LIVE
HE DOESN’T LIVE
SHE DOESN’T LIVE
IT DOESN’T LIVE
WE DON’T LIVE
YOU DON’T LIVE
THEY DON’T LIVE
As you can see, when we use DOESN’Tor DON’T, the verb is LIVE, and not LIVES.
In interrogative sentences, this is what happens:
DO I LIVE … ?
DO YOU LIVE … ?
DOES HE LIVE … ?
DOES SHE LIVE … ?
DOES IT LIVE … ?
DO WE LIVE … ?
DO YOU LIVE … ?
DO THEY LIVE … ?
Just as with negative sentences, you use DO or DOES, and the verb is LIVE, and not LIVES.
Try using this as a guideline to help you out, OK? We’ll talk more about the simple present tense next class.
HOMEWORK:
- Workbook page 38 (everything)
- Student’s book page 44 (everything)
Enjoy the holiday!
Rick
